Yesterday, the following comment was posted on the anti-Rick Santorum website Santorum Exposed:
“Fuck Santorum and the horse he rode into town on.”
It prompted this response:
“See? He’s right, first it’s man on man, and then man on horse!”
(Both of these comments are appended to this blog post.)
I’m glad some people still have a sense of humor about politics, even when bigoted assholes like Santorum are involved.
By the way, though I certainly support Bob Casey, Jr.’s candidacy to replace Santorum as Pennsylvania’s junior senator, I really really really really wish they could find a pro-choice Democrat to run for the seat. Were Santorum not so patently horrible and evil, I would be less comfortable with Casey. But sometimes it has to be “win at all costs”.

Unfortunately there is a lot of misunderstanding about this hypothetical matchup between Casey and Santorum, namely that being anti-choice is advantageous to Casey (or any Democrat). It clearly is not.
According to the latest Rasmussen poll when people know Casey is NOT pro-choice he is actually losing to Santorum by 5 points. The same findings were reported by a Febuary Quinnipiac poll that showed him losing by a similar amount. This poll showed a significant amount of Democrats sitting this race out or voting for a third party once they realized Casey’s position on abortion.
And now for some good news: Chuck Pennacchio is pro-choice and better represents the majority of PAers on a ton of issues as compared with Casey. He is also our best chance to defeat Santorum because he actually has experience defeating tougher right wing Senators as a campaign manager. Chuck has over 6,000 volunteers in county level organizations throughout the state.
Casey on the other hand has never won a tough election in fact his loss to Rendell was a 17 point lead that he let turn into a 12 point defecit. As you think about who your voting for in the Democratic Primary this May 16th it is wise to consider who can best defeat Santorum but don’t be dupped into thinking being anti-choice will help steal Republican votes. Casey gains only 3.9% more Republicans when they are informed. According to the only Zogby poll on this race he is our worst option to beat Santorum and Chuck Pennacchio is our best.
You can learn about all three of these candidates at http://www.chuck2006.com
I bet you anything you’ll shocked to learn about Casey’s other conservative views in his own words.

I shoudl probably delete the previous comment because it is clearly a form letter, but who am I to censor political speech?
I know nothing about Chuck Pennacchio, nor have I tried to verify the numbers cited above. The numbers certainly seem plausible to me.
Pennacchio may well be an excellent candidate to run for the Pennsylvania seat; if he is, I wish the PA dems would get behind him. But that’s not what’s happening (they love their political families in PA), and getting rid of Santorum has to be the top priority.
So, provisionally because I know nothing about Pennacchio, I say good luck to his campaign; I’d much rather see a pro-choice Dem replace Santorum. But my practical side says I’ll take Casey over Santorum in a second. I’m not getting duped that these righty dems are almost as bad as the scary parts of the Republican party, like I was convinced of about Gore in 2000.
